At Orthopedic Surgery Specialists, we proudly offer the latest in technology and medical advances to assist you in your recovery. One of the options we offer at our Novi orthopedic office is harnessing a patient’s own fat cells (adipose tissue) to encourage rapid healing as an alternative to surgery. We provide state-of-the-art care to all of our patients. It is our goal to make your visit with us as pain and anxiety free as possible. We do all we can to educate our patients about all of their health care options and to help guide them to choose a treatment plan that is most suitable and appropriate for their needs, health care goals, and lifestyle. If you are looking for a specialist in sports medicine and orthopedics, let our highly trained orthopedists take care of you.
The idea that a person’s own fat cells can facilitate tissue healing and replace surgery is very exciting. But a recently introduced and FDA-cleared technology may offer a minimally invasive alternative to arthroscopy for repairing tissue, and could also be used as an additional step to arthroscopic surgeries to support soft tissue defects. At our Novi orthopedic office, we are now providing a treatment using lipogems to help our orthopedic patients. Lipogems offers a micro fragmented adipose tissue transplant system that uses a patient’s own fat to help provide needed cushion and support and to facilitate healing. FDA cleared the new Class II single-use device which consists of a transparent plastic cylinder with filters and beads for microfracturing adipose tissue. Lipogems may be used as another option to major invasive surgery. It is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used in the office. If surgery is needed, Lipogems may also provide cushion and support to help support the healing process for any damaged or injured tissue. Studies have shown that adipose tissue maintains its reparative abilities regardless of a person’s age.
The Lipogems method keeps the cells and tissue intact and thus functions much like the way it does naturally in the human body. In the procedure, a few tablespoons of fat are taken from the patient for each site they want to inject. At our Novi orthopedic office, our doctors extract four times the amount of fat cells they need and reduce it by eliminating the waste products they can’t use. The goal is not fat reduction, like liposuction, but it is used therapeutically to enhance soft tissue injuries or in conjunction with arthroscopic surgery to boost healing. Putting fat cells to use in orthopedics might sound strange, but the results show this procedure to be very effective. To find out more about this, give us a call today.
